One of the hardest things to do as a hunter is to be patient. As long as you’re in the woods, you want the deer to start moving early and stay on their feet. The reality of the situation is that deer move on their own timetable which can lead to some frustrating trips to the woods.
And while some of us find it hard to stay put and exercise patience, that’s certainly not the case for all…especially young Dax DuBroc.
Dax, 12-years-old, was on a trip with his father, Jon, to northern Missouri hunting with Phil Brown of Trophy Properties and Auction and let’s just say the conditions were less than pleasant. Cold, windy, and rain made for a slow hunt.
The deer were bedded down and had no urgency to get on their feet. The situation was all too familiar for the DuBroc’s who experienced the same conditions on a hunt in 2012 with Mr. Brown. The end result a season ago was a good time… but no kill.
This time around the hunt was a couple weeks earlier during the rut, but still an exercise in patience.
“After texting a time or two I wanted them to stay in the woods a bit longer,” said Brown.
As the morning wore on nothing worth harvesting had passed, until a nice 10-point buck came into view. As the pace quickened there was precious little time to waste as this trophy was on the move. A moment later, after hours in the woods, Dax bagged his first buck, a trophy scoring 150 5/8 inches.
“Moments after my text they responded with the good news,” recalled Brown. “This was one of the coolest hunts I’ve been a part of this season.”
