By now, if you’re like us, you can hardly stand it. The temperatures are slowly creeping upward and the forest is coming alive with spring critters scampering about. It can only mean one thing… Turkey Season!
In just a few short days the wait will be over for Missourians as the chase for the majestic bird begins. And while you’ll have to hold out a few more days… that doesn’t mean you don’t need to be in the woods today. In fact, right now you can set the table for a successful spring season.
First you select the area in which you’ll be hunting, rather simple I know. Next you should scour the area so that you know all the ins and outs of the area, so that when the turkey goes on the move you can better predict his patterns. Topographic maps are extremely helpful to locate landmarks and to record areas where you’re finding the birds.
Look for turkey tracks along roads, trails, plowed fields and creek bottoms. Also look for droppings, dusting areas, scratchings, roosts and feathers. A heavy concentration of droppings under trees can indicate roosting areas. Scratchings help you determine if birds are in the area-if leaves are turned over and the ground is moist, birds are using the area. Leaves will often be piled directly behind a scratching turkey, indicating the direction of travel.
It’s also a wise move to scout several locations. This will give you some flexibility when the day comes. You can adapt your plan to the weather and given situations you’re facing… and not be stuck with just one option. Having alternatives will certainly lead to a more enjoyable hunt.
